Finding Hot Products – Sourcing Strategies

At this point in time, you should be mostly sold out of selling the odds and ends that were laying around your house. If you know how to use the completed item research tool, you will need to solely rely on it when going out and hunting for deals.

This is where you go hunting for inventory at outlet malls, the mall and other storefronts. Look for inventory from stores that are clearing things out. Discount orientated stores like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, Nordstrom Rack and Ross are perfect to find deals at when sales are on. Jot down any potential items on paper and if you can, take a quick snapshot with your camera phone. You’re just looking to see what’s out there at this point. Take a look at the eBay pulse to give you a good idea of what you should be searching for in these stores.

Take home the list of deals you found and sort out which ones are good and which ones are bad. Do some completed item research on eBay to see which items are selling and at what price. Once you have found out which ones look profitable to sell (after listing fees), head back and grab the items you want to start listing.

If you can, buy multiples of those profitable items. Relisting an item to sell more than once saves you time and makes you more money.

Once you get the hang of it, you really get to see what you can sell on eBay for a profit. Start making relationships with the store managers and clear out old inventory for them. Usually they are more than happy for you to move their old stock for them if they still sell well on eBay.

All of the eBay selling tools in the world cannot prepare a person for the confusion, anger, and frustration that will come when the first problem customer comes along. Knowing how to sell on eBay is much more then just learning how to create an auction and how to properly mail a package. People who do not take the time to learn how to deal with problem customers end up getting angry and saying things that they wish they didn’t.

Never lose your cool when confronted by a nasty customer. When learning how to sell on eBay, make sure you learn how to deal with customers. When dealing with problem customers make sure that you remain professional at all times.

When just starting to learn how to sell on eBay, you should never take the attitude that you don’t want that customer back because of the problem that took place. If you deal with the situation correctly, you might be able to clear things up and have a loyal return customer.

If you don’t want current and future customers to look upon you poorly, make sure you are cool and collected when responding. Your eBay buyers will look at your feedback. They will see how you interact with other buyers. If you leave mean or hateful feedback replies, other customers will not want to do business with you. Even though it would make you feel good, it’s not a good business strategy in the end.

If there is no indication that this is a cycle for this buyer then see if there is something that you can do to resolve the situation. You want to put the fire out without making too much of a big deal out of it. Of course, there are always going to be those situations where things simply cannot be fixed. Some people have decent eBay businesses pulling in good weekly profits and they aren’t interested in making more money. This information is not for those people. For everyone else who wants to grow their eBay business bigger and much more profitable, here are some simple things you can put into action immediately that will fatten your wallet and increase profit margins.

1) Building a list of past customers. If they purchased from you in the past there’s a good chance they will buy from you again. Send them emails of special offers, new inventory, or rare items in stock. All you need to do is get their emails out of PayPal and into an autoresponder.

2) eBay’s Publisher Network. eBay will send you money if someone buys an item on eBay after clicking through your link. Use this with tip #1 and you can really see some great results.

3) Pricing. Be sure to check your listing prices often to see what the market is doing, and then change your prices accordingly. You might be able to make more money by selling inventory a little bit faster by cutting your margins just a tad.

4) Clearing out old inventory. Sometimes I hold on to inventory for too long by not budging on my profit margins or lowering pricing. This inventory takes up shelf space, ties up capital, and hinders cash flow. Get it out, get your cash back, and get some new stock.

5) Saving money is just as important as making money. With eBay policies these days, we’ve found ways to cut our listing fees by 60-80% with just a few simple strategies. We used to have multiple listings of the same item for more listing exposure. Now, we get the same sales and exposure by optimizing our listings for eBay’s new ‘Best Match’ search and putting any multiple items in the same listing. We also use the 30 day or good till canceled listing duration. Just by making those few adjustments, in some months we have seen our eBay fee invoices go from over $1500 a month to under $300.

Is Working On eBay Too Hard?

Back in high school, I had a summer job as a corn detassler. (If you didn’t know, corn detassling involves taking the tassel out of a corn stock to create seed corn.) I would wake up earlier than I wanted to, eat a quick bite of breakfast, and then rush out the door to a stop where a bus would take me and the other workers out to the corn field just as the sun comes up. Maybe you haven’t had the privilege of going out into a corn field early in the morning. Let me tell you, it’s not a very good place to be. The corn is usually soaking wet from the morning dew. There are usually hundreds of insects hopping around, with the most common being a grasshopper. They’d often bounce onto us as we entered the field. Getting in was always the hardest, because I went from being warm and dry to being cold and wet and covered in bugs.

After working for a full day (often 10 hours) in the fields, I would make my way home and collapse exhausted until the next day, when we’d do it all over again.

What does all this have to do with selling on eBay? Well many people who get started out on eBay expect everything to be easy right off the bat. I believe that eBay is the quickest and easiest way to make money online, and that’s why I teach it to my students. Yet although it’s the easiest way to get started, that doesn’t mean that you won’t be challenged. That’s why I told my story about corn detasseling. The first time I did it, I didn’t have a clue what to do. I was slow, and it was hard. Even when I knew what to do, it wasn’t easy to get going every morning.

But after a few days of just getting my lazy butt out of bed and hitting the fields, it wasn’t that bad. In fact, I began to enjoy it. I didn’t mind working a 9 or 10 hour day any more. I knew that I was getting better, and also, I knew that I was making pretty good money. I just kept pushing through the discomfort and stepping outside my comfort zone.

Remember what it was like to pushed or worked harder than you’ve ever had before. Maybe you tried something new for the first time. Maybe you competed in a sporting event. Remember what that feels like. Now, take that same feeling of being “in the zone” and apply that to opening up an eBay business. Of course you’ll have challenges along the way, as with any business. But in the long run, with the right attitude, starting an eBay business is one of the easier ways to get started.

You don’t have to battle hard labor, like I did in the fields. You won’t have to fight the chill in the morning, or the blazing heat in the afternoon. The hardest labor you’ll have to do is put something in a box and take it to the post office.

So is eBay really hard work? You’d probably agree with me that it isn’t. All you need to do is have the right attitude going in. Don’t make excuses and don’t let anything hold you back. Work hard, and your success on eBay will come quickly.
